AC Milan are reportedly ready to offer Romelu Lukaku a return to the Italian City, albeit with Inter’s cross-city rivals, on the condition that their takeover goes through.

At present, the Rossoneri are deep in talks with Bahraini company Investcorp over a potential £850m takeover of the club, which would hand them a hefty transfer budget of as much as £300m this summer, if reports are to be believed.

The club are already close to signing Sven Botman, beating off interest from Tottenham and Newcastle United, and will also be looking to add a striker to their ranks.

Current options Olivier Giroud and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are both at least 35 years old, and neither have hit double figures for the club yet this season, as the club lose ground to rivals Inter in the race for the Serie A title.

And, as per Goal, they could look to Lukaku as their answer, given his brilliant form at Inter Milan that earned him his move to Chelsea, with a report claiming that ‘AC Milan could offer Romelu Lukaku an exit strategy from his Chelsea nightmare depending on the outcome of their current takeover.’

There would have to be compromise from the Blues, however, and willingness to accept a significant loss on the Belgian. ‘There is hope that any new owners that arrive in Chelsea over the next week would cut their losses and offer a below-market rate deal’, Goal claim.

Lukaku’s poor Chelsea stint

Lukaku has not scored a Premier League goal in 2022 and was booed off following another anonymous outing in his side’s most recent home defeat, 4-2 to Arsenal. He has increasingly been left on the bench, with Thomas Tuchel preferring Kai Havertz as a no.9 to the club-record signing.

Off the pitch too, he has become a burden, suggesting in an interview at the turn of the year that he was not happy with the system he had been asked to play and pining for a return to Inter Milan, which has understandably severed any sentimental feeling with the Chelsea fanbase about his homecoming in the summer.
