Why Gaza’s future remains unclear despite the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement

Despite the announcement that Israel and Hamas had reached a ceasefire and hostage-for-prisoner exchange agreement on Wednesday, the question of who is going to govern Gaza after the war’s end remains unresolved. Both Israel and the US, alongside the Palestinian Authority, reject any future governance involving Hamas, which, despite being weakened, has not been eradicated by Israeli military operations.

Seeking foreign policy win ahead of inauguration, incoming Trump admin pressuring Netanyahu on deal

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that a « last-minute crisis » with Hamas was holding up Israeli approval of a long-awaited ceasefire that would pause the fighting in the Gaza Strip and release dozens of hostages.  It was not yet clear if Netanyahu’s statements merely reflected jockeying to keep his fractious coalition together or whether the deal was at risk. For in-depth analysis and a deeper perspective, FRANCE 24’s Carys Garland welcomes Jean-Loup Samaan, Author, Senior Research Fellow at the Middle East Institute of the National University of Singapore, non-resident Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council and Associate Researcher at the Institut Montaigne.

Explications.

Sober buzz: The rise of the healthy drinker

In the middle of Dry January, many people are trying to keep the festive cheer alive, all while staying sober. No- and low-alcoholic beverages are increasingly popular and the industry’s biggest players are scrambling to find ways to profit from the trend. But how long will the buzz last? In this edition of People & Profit, FRANCE 24’s Charles Pellegrin talks to two entrepreneurs from the sector. Jonathan Dubois is the founder of Goxoa, a French zero-alcohol beer brand specifically marketed towards athletes and the winner of the gold medal for the best non-alcoholic beer at the European Beer Challenge. Also joining us is Paul Mathew, the founder of Everleaf Drinks, a British company that produces sustainably sourced non-alcoholic aperitifs.

Migrants in US express fear ahead of Trump’s return to White House

In the United States, Donald Trump’s return to power is worrying undocumented immigrants and the groups that support them. Memories of mass deportations, detention centres and the systematic separation of children from their parents at the border during Trump’s first term are still vivid in people’s minds. So what will his second term mean for immigration? In California, « sanctuary cities » like Los Angeles, San Francisco and Berkeley are bracing for the human and economic impact of potential mass deportations targeting two million undocumented immigrants in California alone. Our US West Coast correspondents report.
