An update on Manchester United’s managerial pursuit has been forthcoming recently.

According to ESPN, Manchester United have asked wantaway players, including Paul Pogba, to delay decisions on their futures until the club have picked a new manager.

Anthony Martial and Donny van de Beek, both currently out on loan with Sevilla and Everton respectably, have also been asked by John Murtough, United’s football director, to wait until a new manager is appointed before deciding where they want to play next season.

But who is currently in the running for the Manchester United job?

ESPN report that Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag are on a five-man shortlist for the job, whilst interim boss Ralf Rangnick is also not ruling out the possibility he could stay on in the role for another year.

Should Ralf Rangnick get the Manchester United job permanently?

Manchester United’s results have not been terrible under Rangnick, but they have had a pretty easy run of games and have still looked subpar in most of their outings.

It will be interesting to see how the former RB Leipzig boss deals with United’s tough run of fixtures during the month of March and beyond.

The Red Devils began life under Rangnick with a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, a game Man United dominated and showed signs of already learning an effective pressing game under the German in.

This was followed by a weakened United side drawing 1-1 with Young Boys.

Manchester United have since faced Norwich, Newcastle, Burnley, Wolves, Aston Villa, Brentford and West Ham in the Premier League.

And, despite three of those sides being in a relegation scrap, Manchester United never really looked convincing in any of those outings, scrapping a 1-0 win over Norwich and being forced to settle for a draw with Newcastle.
