Cristiano Ronaldo’s impressive career

Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the world’s best and most popular footballers to ever play the game.

Ronaldo really began to turn heads when he lit up the Premier League with Manchester United both domestically and in Europe.

Then, after picking up his first Ballon d’Or and guiding Manchester United to a Champions League, Cristiano Ronaldo left the club for Real Madrid in 2009.

Ronaldo went on to ply his trade with Los Blancos for just under a decade till he eventually left the club for Juventus in 2018.

During his stint in Madrid, Ronaldo rivalled Lionel Messi as the best player in the world, going head-to-head for the right to be La Liga’s best.

Ronaldo would score 450 goals and provide 132 assists in 438 outings for the Spanish powerhouse, helping them secure an impressive four Champions Leagues along the way.

Ronaldo has since had spells with Juventus and Man United once again, whilst also winning the European Championship with Portugal and becoming the highest scorer in men’s international football history.

Ronaldo statue divides opinion

So, he, along with Lionel Messi, is of course a well-known figure around the world.

And, in India, they have decided to honour Ronaldo by installing a statue of him in Panaji, Goa:

However, as reported by the BBC, the statue of Ronaldo is dividing opinion.

They report that officials hope it will inspire young people.

However, not everyone is happy with the statue, with critics saying local football players should have been honoured, especially since several past and present members of India’s national team are Goan.

Goa is also a former European colony of Portugal and some people in the Indian state think it is insulting to install the statue during the 60th-anniversary celebrations of Goa finally gaining independence from Portugal.
