Andreas Christensen’s contract issue
Andreas Christensen had a solid start to the 2021/22 campaign, slotting in well at the centre of Chelsea’s three-man defence.
However, the Dane has seemingly fallen down the pecking order under Thomas Tuchel, with the veteran defender Thiago Silva instead, somewhat surprisingly, often taking the place of Christensen in the starting eleven of late.
In fact, Christensen has not started in any of Chelsea’s last four league ties, and in the Blues last eight PL games, the stopper has been afforded 90 minutes on just two occasions.
An explanation for Christensen becoming something of a fringe star has already seemingly been provided, with the Dane’s lack of minutes looking to have something to do with his contract expiring in the summer and him not signing a new one yet:
Thomas Tuchel confirms Andreas Christensen hasn’t featured in the last three #CFC games due to his contract standoff with the club.
“We have the hope it influences the contract situation a little bit,” Tuchel said.

Christensen waiting on Barcelona
Now, a fresh update on Christensen’s contract situation has been forthcoming recently.
Said update looks to shed some light as to why the 25-year-old is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal at Stamford Bridge.
As per journalist Simon Phillips, Christensen has been in negotiations with Barcelona for months now.
It is added that talks with Chelsea have stalled due to Christensen waiting on Barcelona’s contract offer. If they do not come in with one, though, he will accept Chelsea’s offer:
Andreas Christensen has been in negotiations with Barcelona for ‘months’ now and he has ‘stalled on Chelsea’ due to waiting on the Spanish giants to come in with their offer, and if they don’t, he will accept Chelsea’s offer on the table.
