Chelsea due to take on Brentford

A much depleted Chelsea are due to head up the road for a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie with Brentford on Wednesday night, COVID-19 permitting.

The Blues tried and failed to have their Premier League clash with Wolves called off, in a scenario that saw them able to name just six players on their substitutes bench at Molineux, including two goalkeepers after COVID-19 hit their squad.

Now, they take on an equally hit Brentford, who had their midweek and weekend ties called off amid COVID cases sweeping through their squad too, with a place in the semi-final of a domestic competition at stake.

Thomas Tuchel issues mixed fitness news

Now, Thomas Tuchel has issued mixed team news ahead of the clash.

Jorginho, who finished as Chelsea’s top goalscorer last season, is a welcome return having now tested negative for COVID, but there are two new injury problems.

Both Trevoh Chalobah, who started the Wolves game in midfield, and Andreas Christensen are doubts for the London encounter:

Tuchel says Jorginho is back in training after testing negative for COVID. Christensen and Chalobah are doubtful to play for #CFC v Brentford due to injury.

This leaves the Chelsea boss with selection headaches still, and little choice of rotation, ahead of what could be a very hectic January and February for the Blues.

Can they still pick up a much-needed win to progress to the semi-finals?
