Country music was gaining mainstream attention already, but Carter made sure that the foundational voices in the genre would not be left unheard. Artists of color with large and small footprints in the country music community have been gradually enacting change over the course of decades, and while a project like Cowboy Carter or a single like “A Bar Song” scan as important flash points, neither can solve this issue singlehandedly.
