We\u2019ve never gone out,\u201d he tells Stern. \u201cShe\u2019s special, and I don\u2019t want these rumors to ruin our friendship because that\u2019s what we have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pair apparently bonded when they were hosted on Necker Island, Virgin Group founder Richard Branson\u2019s private hideaway. \u201cI got on a plane with nine people \u2014 Jewel was one of them,\u201d he explains. \u201cShe was somebody I just had some tremendous conversations with.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VcZ7W0Okm1w?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;fs=1&amp;hl=en-US&amp;autohide=2&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe gossip columns took notice when the singer, 50, and actor, 69, appeared together at a tennis fundraiser last December in the British Virgin Islands. Later, in April, <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elle.com\/culture\/music\/a60446644\/jewel-interview-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\">Elle<\/a><\/em>\u00a0magazine published an interview in which Jewel gave her own response on the two-time Oscar winner, declaring him \u201ca great person,\u201d adding, \u201cthe public fascination is intense for sure.\u201d And that was all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCostner enjoyed a hot streak in the late \u201880s and early \u201890s as the lead in <em>The Untouchables, No Way Out, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, Dances With Wolves <\/em>and <em>The Bodyguard<\/em>, in which he played the titular character alongside the late superstar artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/whitney-houston\/\">Whitney Houston<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Conversation moved on to Houston, who, by making her silver screen debut as Rachel Marron and landing a massive, global hit with the film\u2019s soundtrack, become one of the biggest stars of them all. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could have been Michelle Pfeiffer, it could have been Julia Roberts,\u201d remarks Costner, \u201cbut when I looked at it, I thought, \u2018No, it should be Whitney Houston\u2019\u201d. He recounts, \u201cfor me, it was so easy to go, \u2018Well this is the most beautiful girl, this is the one who can sing \u2026 this is the girl.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9vZ7I2zRRSo?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;fs=1&amp;hl=en-US&amp;autohide=2&amp;start=105&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHouston, whose life and premature death in 2012 at the age of 48 is retold in the 2018 documentary <em>Whitney<\/em>, was initially out of her comfort zone in <em>The Bodyguard<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>She \u201cdidn\u2019t really know how to do [her character\u2019s first] line and I said, \u2018We have to find the acid in you \u2026 the kind of diva moment in you,\u2019\u201d Costner explains. \u201cI said, \u2018If you\u2019re uncertain about things, Whitney, just look at me and tell me and we will drift off into the corner and I\u2019ll make this right for you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was Costner\u2019s idea for Houston to kick off her cover of Dolly Parton\u2019s \u201cI Will Always Love You\u201d a cappella, he reckons. \u201cIf she\u2019s going to sing a song, the way she can really show that she really loved me was she would do it without a single note and that would prove how brave she is,\u2019\u201d he claims. <\/p>\n<p>And in a bolt from the blue, Costner confirmed he had planned on making a sequel to <em>The Bodyguard<\/em>, with Princess Diana in a co-starring role. \u201cShe was very sweet,\u201d Costner says of the late member of royalty, who died 1997, aged 36. \u201cI never made that movie because I could not replace Princess Di,\u201d he says.
