The rising Venezuelan star went viral among the online LGBTQ+ community thanks to his sexy music video \u201cQu\u00edtate La Ropa,\u201d which showed guys <em>perreando<\/em>, or twerking, for him in a locker room. La Cruz has since manifested that gay fantasy into a blossoming music career with co-signs from giants in the genre like Karol G, Young Miko and Danny Ocean.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI feel [Pride Month] is necessary to see how far we\u2019ve come and where we can go next,\u201d La Cruz tells <em>Billboard<\/em> over Zoom. \u201cHonestly, I\u2019m proud of who I am all year long. I talk openly about my sexuality all year long because for me that\u2019s normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPuerto Rican trap artist Kevin Fret pioneered representation for gay men in <em>m\u00fasica urbana <\/em>before his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/latin\/kevin-fret-dead-latin-trap-artist-dies-8493026\/\">murder<\/a> in January 2019. Since then, there has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/latin\/latin-lgbtq-artists-game-changers-1235089075\/\">notable increase<\/a> of LGBTQ people in reggaeton, with women like Young Miko and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/villano-antillano\/\">Villano Antillano<\/a> leading the way. Now, La Cruz is becoming a leading gay artist in reggaeton. Growing up as Alfonso La Cruz in La Guaira, Venezuela, he listened to the music of reggaeton pioneers like Ivy Queen and Arc\u00e1ngel. La Cruz sings a bit of the latter\u2019s love song \u201cMujer Maravillosa\u201d while noting the lack of gay perspective in the genre back then.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThat song is for a woman but when I was in love with my first boyfriend and I listened to it, I felt I could relate,\u201d he says. \u201cI would have loved to hear a song that expressed exactly how I felt. Within a genre that I\u2019ve listened to all my life, I had never heard a song where I could say, \u2018Wow! I experienced what happened in that song.&rsquo;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDue to the ongoing economic crisis in Venezuela, La Cruz decided to move to Madrid to pursue his dreams of a music career. In 2018, he became known throughout Spain for competing on the reality singing competition<em> Operaci\u00f3n Triunfo.<\/em> After the show, La Cruz was courted by a few record labels. One was ready to sign him under the condition that he would not mention gender in his songs. La Cruz instead went the independent route and rounded up a small team who believed in his vision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI didn\u2019t sign any contract that would make me unhappy or that I couldn\u2019t relate with,\u201d he recalls. \u201cI\u2019ve had obstacles in my career, and they\u2019ve been more on the industry level musically speaking with A&amp;Rs, labels and music streaming platforms. I\u2019ve seen myself in uncomfortable situations, but I\u2019ve taken all that as a sign to keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OWhfNYITd2I?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;fs=1&amp;hl=en-US&amp;autohide=2&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn 2022, La Cruz started pushing the boundaries of reggaeton with his music videos for \u201cDesnudx,\u201d \u201cBoulevard,\u201d and \u201cTe Conoc\u00ed Bailando,\u201d which showed him in love with (or lusting after) other men. Throughout his debut album <em>Hawaira<\/em>, which is named after his Venezuelan hometown, his objects of affections are clearly identified with male pronouns. The album\u2019s songs have collectively registered 2.5 million official on-demand U.S. streams, per Luminate. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cSometimes as gay people we limit ourselves a lot from achieving our dreams because we believe they won\u2019t happen on the basis of being gay,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s something that we need to get out of our heads. I love being a reference for those kids who want to make music but don\u2019t do it because they\u2019re afraid. The fear only stops you. You have to go for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn June 2023, La Cruz made the jump into international stardom thanks to his follow-up single \u201cQu\u00edtate La Ropa.\u201d In the sultry reggaeton romp, he sang about wanting to lose his clothes with a lover. In the music video, La Cruz was surrounded by hunky, shirtless men that were <em>perreando<\/em> in a gym locker room. The song went viral on TikTok during Pride Month with gay men embracing a reggaeton anthem they could twerk to in videos of their own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe idea for the \u2018Qu\u00edtate La Ropa\u2019 video came to me in a gym,\u201d he says with a laugh. \u201cI knew it had to involve some twerking. It\u2019s something that a gay boy sometimes imagines in a locker room. That was me showing the world that other things exist. That song basically changed my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLa Cruz\u2019s \u201cregayton,\u201d which is what his fans playfully call his music, has caught the attention of artists like Omar Apollo, Young Miko, Villano Antillano and Venezuela\u2019s top reggaeton artist Danny Ocean. The latter recently featured La Cruz in his music video for \u201cCero Condiciones,\u201d which talks about \u201ccoming out of the closet\u201d to live a free and truthful life. After DMing for several months with Colombian superstar Karol G on Instagram, she invited La Cruz to meet her at her concert in Caracas last March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI told her I was very nervous because I\u2019m a big fan of hers,\u201d he recalls. \u201cShe told me, \u2018No! I\u2019m also a big fan of yours!\u2019 That was a beautiful moment because she\u2019s one of my idols. Knowing that she listens to me and likes what I do, that\u2019s incredible. She supports my message and my concept and told me, \u2018Keep it up.\u2019 I feel like I made a spiritual connection with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLa Cruz\u2019s recent singles such as \u201cEasy Boy,\u201d his reggaeton ode to casual sex, are being distributed by Sony Music Entertainment Espa\u00f1a. He is also hard at work on his second album. With a bigger team and the support of the LGBTQ+ community, La Cruz wants to continue to break down barriers for queer artists like himself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cTo have a community of people that identify with my music and they can relate to those experiences, that\u2019s the most beautiful thing,\u201d he says. \u201cWith my music, I want to give visibility and normalize a lot of things on a social level that are looked down upon.
