You\u2019d only be throwing them into the air. A musical comedy dream.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPer Riccardi, Arvell Shaw, who played bass with Armstrong, told documentarian Ken Burns, \u201cThree or four months [after \u201cHello, Dolly!\u201d was recorded], we were out on the road [in early 1964] doing one-nighters in Nebraska and Iowa, way, way out. And every night we\u2019d hear from the audience, \u2018Hello, Dolly!,\u2019 \u2018Hello, Dolly!\u2019 The first couple of nights Louis ignored it, and it got louder \u2026 \u2018Hello, Dolly!\u2019 Louis looked at me and said, \u2018What the hell is \u2018Hello, Dolly!\u2019?\u2019 We had to get the music and learn it and put it in the concert. The first time we put it in, pandemonium broke out. (\u201cU.S. Rocks &amp; Reels From Beatles\u2019 Invasion,\u201d read the main headline.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNoted Riccardi, Armstrong drew front-page <em>Billboard<\/em> ink of his own a week later in a story headlined \u201cBroadway Lights Up Labels; Diskers Aim for Peak Year.\u201d \u201cThe music and drama of Broadway is making solid impact on the record company scene this season,\u201d Mike Gross wrote. \u201cNot since the heyday of <em>My Fair Lady<\/em> have the diskers looked to Broadway product with such bullish attitudes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs \u201cHello, Dolly!\u201d scaled the Hot 100, Armstrong further realized its impact. Riccardi sourced a story by columnist Jimmy Breslin quoting Armstrong: \u201cPeople keep coming up to me about \u2018Dolly\u2019 and sayin\u2019, \u2018You\u2019re doing all right. You\u2019re selling records right behind The Beatles.\u2019 I\u2019m with The Beatles. Music is music. There\u2019s all kinds. But it all come from the same place. It all come from old, sanctified churches. I don\u2019t care how they change it \u2026 old, sanctified churches is the essence of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBy mid-April 1964, according to Riccardi, Armstrong told <em>Newsweek<\/em> of his impending Hot 100 No. 1, \u201cI like that tune. It\u2019s got a good feeling, it\u2019s a good, happy one.\u201d Of its recording, he said, \u201cWe didn\u2019t have no arrangement or nothin\u2019. We just scat out our parts. I played it the way I am, Satchmo\u2019s way. The people don\u2019t forget that old beat. The mark stood until last December, when Brenda Lee, then 78, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/lists\/brenda-lee-rockin-around-the-christmas-tree-number-one-hot-100\/\">jingled to No. 1<\/a> with \u201cRockin\u2019 Around the Christmas Tree\u201d (although she was 13 when she recorded the carol, originally released in 1958).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPlus, by dethroning The Beatles after 14 weeks atop the Hot 100, Armstrong put a stop to the longest continuous command for an act in the chart\u2019s history to that point, one that stood solely until 1993, when Whitney Houston tied it, via \u201cI Will Always Love You.\u201d Boyz II Men surpassed the mark with a 16-week No. 1 run in 1994, while The Black Eyed Peas currently hold the record: 26 consecutive weeks, thanks to \u201cBoom Boom Pow\u201d (12 weeks) and \u201cI Gotta Feeling\u201d (12) in 2009.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFollowing the reign of \u201cHello, Dolly!,\u201d Armstrong remained prominent on <em>Billboard<\/em>\u2019s charts.
