\n\tIn her Cosmopolitan<\/a> <\/em>cover story published Tuesday (April 30), the South African star shared her thoughts on recent comparisons between her and the Barbadian singer-turned-Fenty billionaire \u2014 which, while flattering, aren\u2019t indicative of her full story.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cRihanna is Rihanna. It\u2019s a compliment,\u201d she told the publication. \u201cBut at the same time, I\u2019m my own artist. I\u2019m Tyla. And I know as people get to know me and my music, they will see me as just Tyla. So I\u2019m fine with it now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPeople want to tie me to something familiar to them, cool,\u201d added the musician. \u201cBut at the end of the day, we\u2019re doing something no one\u2019s done before, and it can\u2019t really be compared to anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe 22-year-old singer is fresh off the release of her self-titled debut album, which dropped March 22 and features collaborations with Tems, Travis Scott and more. The set debuted at No. 24 on the Billboard 200<\/a> and has spent five weeks on the chart so far, led by mega-viral hit \u201cWater,\u201d which reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 <\/a>in January.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking of \u201cWater,\u201d Tyla also looked back on the slightly awkward process of getting her parents on board with the track \u2014 specifically, its NSFW lyrics. On the steamy, popiano track, which inspired a wildfire TikTok booty-shaking dance trend last year, she sings, \u201cMake me sweat, make me hotter\/ Make me lose my breath, make me water.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMy mom was the person that saved me because my father was like, \u2018What are you singing about?’\u201d she recalled of the song, which won the Grammys\u2019 first-ever African music performance award in March. \u201cI was like, \u2018Nah, it\u2019s nothing bad, Dad. It\u2019s just carefree fun.\u2019 He\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, okay.\u2019 And my mother was the person being like, \u2018Relax, relax. Relax.’\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
