\n\tJoJo Siwa<\/a>\u2018s edgy new era might be all about charting a new path forward, but her \u201cKarma\u201d<\/a> is bringing along some key players from her past. In a conversation with Billboard<\/em> News<\/em>, renowned choreographer Richy Jackson details how his approach to choreography has evolved since he first worked with the pop star more than a decade ago.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI met JoJo on a show I was judging called Abby\u2019s Ultimate Dance Competition<\/em>,\u201d he recounts. \u201cI think she was nine years old. Later on in her career, she was with Nickelodeon, she began doing Dance Moms<\/em> with Abby Lee [Miller] and she started doing music on YouTube. I hadn\u2019t seen her since that competition show, and I happened to run into her and her mom at Studio City, and her mom was like, \u2018Would you ever wanna choreograph for JoJo?\u2019 And I\u2019m like, \u2018Yes!’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSiwa placed fifth on season two of Abby\u2019s Ultimate Dance Competition<\/em>, and appeared on seasons five and six of Dance Moms<\/em> from 2015 to 2016. In 2017, the multi-hyphenate signed with Nickelodeon, under whom she acted in various programs, released several children\u2019s songs and starred in her own feature film, The J Team<\/em>, which earned her a pair of Children\u2019s and Family Emmy nods. On the Kid Albums chart, Siwa has logged three entries, reaching as high as No. 12 with 2019\u2019s Celebrate.<\/em><\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cShe was 13 then. Chroeographing for her then \u2026 she was very young, the songs were for kids, it was with Nickelodeon,\u201d explains Jackson. \u201cThere [were] certain dance moves I could do and not do, certain hip moves couldn\u2019t make it into the choreography because it was for kids. But now, that she\u2019s in her \u2018adult pop star\u2019 era that we\u2019re about to get into \u2014 now, it\u2019s like the game is open. We\u2019ve been laughing, \u2019cause I\u2019m like, \u2018Ah, now we can do this move and do that move!\u201d It\u2019s more risque, so I\u2019m excited. She\u2019s just one of those artist that I feel is the next generation\u2019s big pop star, and she just goes for it, and I love that about her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJackson, of course, is no stranger to helping pop stars express their risque side through dance. His credits include the bulk of Lady Gaga<\/a>\u2018s acclaimed videography \u2014 including 2009\u2019s VMAs-sweeping \u201cBad Romance\u201d and 2017\u2019s headlining sets at Coachella and the Super Bowl Halftime Show \u2014 as well as Katy Perry<\/a>\u2018s \u201cCalifornia Gurls\u201d and, now, Siwa\u2019s \u201cKarma.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSiwa launched \u201cKarma\u201d with a flashy, choreogrpahy-packed music video on April 5, with the intent to achieve a rebrand<\/a> similar to that of Miley Cyrus<\/a> during her controversial Bangerz<\/em> era back in 2013. \u201cThe last song JoJo played for me was \u2018D.R.E.A.M.,’\u201d says Jackson. \u201cIt was very young, very kiddie. Once I heard [\u201cKarma\u201d] I was like, \u2018Yes!\u2019 It was so unexpected \u2026 to hear this vibe on her, I loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn his chat with Billboard News<\/em>, Jackson also reflects on his experience bringing Gaga\u2019s iconic dance moves to the gaming landscape via an A.I.-utilizing Fortnite<\/em> collaboration<\/a>, recalls learning that he would be choreographing the Super Bowl Halftime Show and discusses the impact of TikTok on the contemporary dance scene.<\/p>\n
