\n\tOver the past years, Coachella has been committed to integrating regional Mexican music into its lineup, with previous performers including Banda MS<\/a>, Grupo Firme<\/a>, Natanael Cano<\/a> and Los Tucanes de Tijuana<\/a>. This year, among the m\u00fasica mexicana stars were Peso Pluma<\/a> and Carin Le\u00f3n<\/a>, both making their Coachella debut this year \u2014 a nod to the genre\u2019s continued global and mainstream rise. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Sunday (April 14), before Le\u00f3n took the main stage around 5:30 p.m. to chants of \u201cCarin, Carin,\u201d a video played showing images of the singer face-to-face with a potent lion who runs wild across a desert. The ferocious animal is then immortalized onstage with a massive wooden-shaped lion wearing a tejana<\/em> (cowboy hat) erected in the background. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe sun was beginning to set in Indio, Calif., when Le\u00f3n took the stage, and it was the perfect vibe for his soulful tunes\u00a0and tremendous vocals that roared across the desert and pulled spectators that perhaps had never heard of the Sonora-born artist.\u00a0With his live band \u2014 consisting of more than 20 musicians that played the tuba, accordion, guitars and drums, among other instruments \u2014 Le\u00f3n didn\u2019t hold back in his performance, understanding the significance of this moment on the main stage. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cViva M\u00e9xico chingada madre<\/em>,\u201d he said, extra prideful of being Mexican, and representing a genre that has long been a backbone of Latin music. \u201cD\u00f3nde est\u00e1n dolidos<\/em> (Where are those who are hurting)?\u201d he asked, setting the tone for a set that could mend broken hearts. He began singing the hits early on, not wanting to waste a minute, from \u201cMe La Avent\u00e9\u201d to \u201cTe Lo Agradezco,\u201d \u201cCoraz\u00f3n de Oro\u201d and his bilingual country song with Kane Brown, \u201cThe One (Pero No Como Yo).\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt didn\u2019t take long for Le\u00f3n to get ahold of a Mexican flag, which he held onto tightly. He then burst into the hip-swiveling \u201cQue Vuelvas,\u201d his collab with Grupo Frontera. Of course, it was a perfect opportunity for him to showcase his mesmerizing dance moves that have now become a staple at his shows. The irresistible huapango \u201cLa Boda del Huitlacoche\u201d followed, which inspired a massive sing-along, and fans couldn\u2019t help but show off their zapateado <\/em>moves, literally dancing up a storm in the desert. <\/p>\n

\n\tHe transitioned to rock en espa\u00f1ol with a spot-on cover of Hombres G\u2019s \u201cTe Quiero.\u201d And after that, he brought out Mau y Ricky for \u201cLlorar y Llorar,\u201d marking the duo\u2019s first time at Coachella. Nearing the end of his almost 50-minute set, he winded down with a fan-favorite, \u201cSi Una Vez,\u201d honoring one of the greats, Selena Quintanilla, and then went on to perform \u201cPrimera Cita.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThank you for this first time,\u201d he said before stepping off the stage. \u201cArriba la raza<\/em>, arriba<\/em> Coachella, but more than anything, arriba la m\u00fasica<\/em>.\u201d He closed with the hit song \u201cSeg\u00fan Qui\u00e9n,\u201d his 2023 collab with Maluma. <\/p>\n

\n\tOther Latin artists who performed at Coachella this year included Young Miko, Bizarrap, Santa Fe Klan, Ludmilla and J Balvin<\/a>, who was night three\u2019s pre-headliner (just before headliner Doja Cat). \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tLe\u00f3n is also set to also make his Stagecoach debut on Friday, April 26. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
