\n\tThere may still be a couple days left until Easter, but the Lorde<\/a> has been resurrected. The 27-year-old singer-songwriter finally returned Thursday (March 28), nearly three years after she dropped her last studio record, Solar Power<\/em>, to release her version of Talking Heads<\/a>\u2018 \u201cTake Me to the River,\u201d becoming the third artist to cover the rock band ahead of A24\u2019s Stop Making Sense <\/em>tribute album.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe new track finds Lorde channeling the effortless coolness of David Byrne as she croons over a sauntering bass line and plucky percussion. \u201cI don\u2019t know why I love you like I do\/ After all the things that you put me through,\u201d she sings. \u201cThe 16 candles burning on my wall\/ Turning me into the biggest fool of them all.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe \u201cGreen Light\u201d artist also penned a nostalgic note to fans recalling the moment she first discovered Talking Heads in 2008, describing herself as \u201ctwelve years old, eyes painted black, jaw blasted with acne\u201d watching an old video of Byrne and bassist Tina Weymouth performing \u201cTake Me to the River\u201d on TV. The group \u2014 which also consisted of Chris Frantz and Jerry Harrison \u2014 reached No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100<\/a> in 1979 with their version of the track, which was originally performed by Al Green.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI feel a portal open between me and the screen,\u201d Lorde wrote, setting the scene. \u201cHumour, lust, rhythm and ritual course through me. I don\u2019t understand what I\u2019m feeling, but I do understand that the band in the grainy video live with the same strangeness that I do. My palms tingle. My insides are replaced.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Grammy winner also explained that she wanted her cover to invoke the same untamed youthfulness she felt in the moment she first watched Byrne perform. \u201cWe did it fast, I didn\u2019t let myself tidy it up too much,\u201d she wrote of the track. \u201cIt had to feel young and imperfect.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tLorde\u2019s cover follows Paramore\u2019s take on \u201cBurning Down the House\u201d <\/a>and Teezo Touchdown\u2019s rendition of \u201cMaking Flippy Floppy.\u201d All three songs will be featured on A24\u2019s upcoming Everyone\u2019s Getting Involved: A Tribute to Talking Heads\u2019<\/em> Stop Making Sense <\/em>music compilation, which celebrates the 40th anniversary of the group\u2019s iconic 1984 Stop Making Sense <\/em>concert film.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
