interview with NPR\u2019s<\/a> Rodney Carmichael, Andr\u00e9 confessed that his obsession with the main instrument on the instrumental jazz album, the flute, has long caused some concern among his friends in Atlanta. \u201cI laugh at it because my homies in Atlanta, we\u2019ll talk and they\u2019ll be like, \u2018Man, you know n\u2014as think you crazy to f\u2013k around with this flute,\u201d he said, confessing to being \u201cin on the joke\u201d about his curious musical tendencies.<\/p>\n\n\tThe album, described as a \u201cstunning 87-minute mind-bender, minimalist and experimental, tribal and transcendent,\u201d will likely confuse many fans of such iconic hits as Andr\u00e9\u2019s \u201cHey Ya!\u201d and Grammy-winning OutKast\u2019s \u201cMs. Jackson,\u201d \u201cRoses,\u201d So Fresh, So Clean\u201d and \u201cPlayer\u2019s Ball,\u201d which were cooked up with 3000\u2019s former rap partner, Big Boi.<\/p>\n
\n\tIn a statement about the album, Andr\u00e9 assured frustrated fans wishing to hear his one-of-a-kind vocals that, sorry, there is no Prince-like vault of unheard music waiting to be released. \u201c<\/em>There\u2019s this misconception that I just won\u2019t do it,\u201d\u00a0Andr\u00e9 said of releasing a rap record.\u00a0\u201cI think people feel like I\u2019m sitting around on rap albums, or sitting around and I\u2019m just not putting them out in that way. And no it\u2019s not like that\u2026 In my mind, I really would like to make a rap album. So maybe that happens one day, but I got to find a way to say what I want to say in an interesting way that\u2019s appealing to me at this age.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\tNew Blue Sun<\/em>, then, features none of Andr\u00e9\u2019s intricate, river-flowing rhymes, or as NPR put it, \u201cno bars, no beats, no sub-bass.\u201d In fact, 3000 doesn\u2019t sing on the record at all, but he does tear it up on his trusty flutes. In fact, he plays a number of flutes as well as digital wind instruments, and instead of his signature motor-mouthed poetry the album\u2019s first track kind of apologizes for the lack of language with the me culpa title, \u201cI swear, I Really Wanted To Make A \u2018Rap\u2019 Album But This Is Literally The Way The Wind Blew Me This Time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\tThe origin story of the album begins with Andr\u00e9 bumping into experimental jazz great Carlos Ni\u00f1o at the hip L.A. grocery store Erewhon, followed by the rapper showing up at Ni\u00f1o\u2019s place with is flute and jamming in the basement. The jam sessions introduced 3000 to the group of performers who appear on the album, including keyboardist Surya Botofasina and guitarist Nate Mercereau, as well as musicians Deantoni Parks, Diego Gaeta, Matthewdavid, V.C.R, Diego Gaeta, Jesse Peterson, and\u00a0Mia Doi Todd. <\/p>\n
\n\tNot planning to make an album, they started the sessions a year ago, with all the songs improvised in real time, and though it is not what fans expected after all this time, the project is described as an album that \u201cexposes his unrefined soul \u2014 and the delicate nature of his creative process \u2014 in ways the Gemini wordsmith\u2019s fine-tuned verses tend to conceal.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cEven in our height of what people know of what I\u2019ve done before, I was always like a slow writer. I\u2019m not a freestyler. I don\u2019t be freestyling. I just wasn\u2019t blessed with that,\u201d Andr\u00e9 said. \u201cEven during the earlier times, Big Boi, he just kind of got down, like, he\u2019s so fast and efficient with what he does. And it\u2019ll take me a minute to throw them down. So I\u2019ve always kind of been analyzing it or figuring out how I wanted to approach it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tFor some reason at this time writing those kind of verses are just harder for Andr\u00e9 and there\u2019s just nothing he\u2019s written that he feels comfortable sharing. \u201cThat\u2019s why\u00a0New Blue Sun<\/em>\u00a0was something that I realized, whoa, I really want people to hear it,\u201d said 3000, who estimates that he owns 30-40 flutes. \u201cI really want to share it. That\u2019s my only gauge. I have to like it as a person, as an artist myself, because if I don\u2019t like it I can\u2019t expect nobody else to like it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\tIf you\u2019ve been paying attention over the past decade, you probably spotted Andr\u00e9 in random Instagram videos wandering through the world with his trusty flue, which turned into a kind of Where\u2019s Waldo?<\/em> game for his fans. \u201cI didn\u2019t like that because they just kept getting little nicks of me, just kind of messing around, you know,\u201d he said of the surreptitious videos. \u201cSo I just felt like I\u2019d really like to play but it was really for me. I would just walk for hours and I\u2019m a walker. I love to walk. So I would just walk and play for hours. I did that for years and it got to a point where, okay, I want to share. And so going into\u00a0New Blue Sun<\/em>, it was kind of like trying to figure out, well, how do I share it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\tHe did, however, run the new tracks by some of his younger contemporaries, with Tyler, the Creator and Frank Ocean getting an early listen to the album, with Tyler opining about one song, \u201cIt sounds like you\u2019re chasing a butterfly through a garden and I figured it out. It helped me to figure out how to do this,\u201d in reference to the Odd Future founder\u2019s collection of travel suitcases he could not figure out how to properly display on a wall in his home until hearing Andr\u00e9\u2019s new music.<\/p>\n
\n\tAnd to be clear, Andr\u00e9 didn\u2019t know this was where his life would take him, either. So if his fans look sideways at the album \u2014 whose song titles include references to everything from the Dalai Lama, John Wayne Gace, Beyonc\u00e9 and that time 3000 turned into a panther in Hawaii while on an ayahusaca trip \u2014 he gets it. <\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cIf I was on the outside, I would feel the same way. So, for me, I don\u2019t know what I\u2019m going to do,\u201d he said of the album that will have a \u201cno bars\u201d warning on the packaging, which inspired the former MC to go long on the song titles in order to give \u201cas much information\u201d as possible to the instrumentals. \u201cBut that\u2019s the cool and scary thing about it. And I think as an artist, you kind of got to put yourself out there to be prepared to respond. I\u2019m a responding person. That\u2019s what I am. I\u2019m responding to what\u2019s given to me. It\u2019s responding to my contemporaries. It\u2019s responding to what I love. It\u2019s responding to what I don\u2019t like. It\u2019s responding to all of that.\u201d<\/p>\n
