\n\tIn a new interview on Max\u2019s Who\u2019s Talking to Chris Wallace?<\/a><\/em>, Manilow sat down with the veteran journalist to discuss his storied career \u2014 which includes his decision to come out publicly<\/a> in 2017. While the singer maintained that his coming out \u201cwasn\u2019t a big deal\u201d at age 72, it could have been catastrophic when he was approaching the height of his popularity.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWell, in the \u201970s, you didn\u2019t [come out]. It wasn\u2019t the same as it is today,\u201d Manilow explained in the interview. \u201cNow, being gay is no being deal, but back in the \u201970s, it would\u2019ve killed a career. And Clive [Davis] kind of told me that in his own way: \u2018Don\u2019t do that, not yet.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tManilow added that along with the fact that \u201cthe public was not ready for anybody to come out,\u201d he was also not in a place where he was ready to talk about his sexuality. \u201cFrankly, it was just too personal. I just didn\u2019t want to talk about my personal life anyway, I never did that; I was happy talking about music,\u201d he said. \u201cBut talking about my personal life was just kind of creepy to me, so I just never did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe \u201cMandy\u201d singer met his now-husband Garry Kief in the late-\u201970s, when Kief became Manilow\u2019s manager. \u201cGarry actually kind of saved my life, because as my career exploded \u2026 going back to an empty hotel room, you could get into a lot of trouble if you\u2019re alone night after night,\u201d Manilow said. \u201cBut I met Garry right when everything was exploding, and I didn\u2019t have to go back to those empty hotel rooms; I had somebody to cry with and to celebrate with.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs for his decision to ultimately come out? \u201cI think it was a non-event for me,\u201d he said. \u201cReally, Garry and I have been together for so long, it just never dawned on me that we were going to come out. But, when we got married, it was a big deal, so we did.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
