That breakthrough full-length included hits like \u201cOcean Avenue,\u201d \u201cWay Away\u201d and \u201cOnly One,\u201d and became the first of their seven albums to reach the top 40 of the Billboard 200.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/X9fLbfzCqWw?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;fs=1&amp;hl=en-US&amp;autohide=2&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tYellowcard will bring their hits to Las Vegas this weekend as part of When We Were Young, the huge pop-punk and emo festival that is back for its second year beginning on Saturday (Oct. 21). Green Day and Blink-182 will be headlining in 2023, and Yellowcard will be sharing a stage that also includes The Offspring, Good Charlotte and 5 Seconds of Summer, among others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAhead of When We Were Young \u2014 and a 2024 that promises to keep fans of their toes \u2014 Yellowcard leader Ryan Key checked in with Billboard about the band\u2019s recent EP, future plans and more, in this edition of 20 Questions:<\/p>\n<div class=\"container \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-m lrv-u-margin-lr-auto   \">\n<ol>\n<li><strong>What\u2019s the first piece of music that you bought for yourself, and what was the medium?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMichael Jackson\u2019s <em>Bad<\/em> on CD.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-m lrv-u-margin-lr-auto   \">\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>What was the first concert you attended?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNew Kids on the Block and Boyz II Men at the Jacksonville Memorial Coliseum.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-m lrv-u-margin-lr-auto   \">\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>What did your parents do for a living when you were a kid?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMy dad was general manager \/ vice president of a car dealership and my mom was a mom.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-m lrv-u-margin-lr-auto   \">\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Who made you realize you could be an artist full-time?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMy mom was a huge source of support for me as a kid and encouraged my creativity, but actually my high school theater teacher, Michael Higgins, made me realize I could be an artist.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"container \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-m lrv-u-margin-lr-auto   \">\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong>What\u2019s at the top of your professional bucket list?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe very top? To one day sit at the Oscars, nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score. When I\u2019m not touring with Yellowcard these days, I\u2019m working towards furthering my career in film scoring. \u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"container \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-m lrv-u-margin-lr-auto   \">\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><strong>How did your hometown\/city shape who you are?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe most influential part of my upbringing in Jacksonville, Florida was attending Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. I feel like most people don\u2019t look back very fondly on their high school experience but mine transformed my life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"container \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-m lrv-u-margin-lr-auto   \">\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><strong>What\u2019s the last song you listened to?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tI just walked downstairs from the studio, and the Imperial March from <em>Star Wars<\/em> was playing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"container \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-m lrv-u-margin-lr-auto   \">\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li><strong>If you could see any artist in concert, dead or alive, who would it be?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNirvana.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-m lrv-u-margin-lr-auto   \">\n<ol start=\"9\">\n<li><strong>What\u2019s the wildest thing you\u2019ve seen happen in the crowd of one of your sets?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t2006 \u2013 Brazil. Mix Festival in Sao Paulo, 50,000 people in attendance. The entire place was a giant mosh pit, and in the middle of it, the fans made a human pyramid that was 3 people high and hoisted a Brazilian flag with a Yellowcard logo in the middle of it. It was iconic and I\u2019ll never forget it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"container \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-m lrv-u-margin-lr-auto   \">\n<ol start=\"10\">\n<li><strong>How did the pandemic affect your creative process?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen I lost the ability to tour, I was pretty scared. At that point I didn\u2019t know that Yellowcard would ever be a part of my life again, so losing the ability to play shows on my own made the future and my income really uncertain. In the end, the pandemic turned out to be a strangely positive experience for me though, because it taught me how to take my professional life online, and I built a community with fans like I\u2019d never had before.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oraYIHNYcz8?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;fs=1&amp;hl=en-US&amp;autohide=2&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"container \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-m lrv-u-margin-lr-auto   \">\n<ol start=\"11\">\n<li><strong>What was the reception like to Yellowcard\u2019s\u00a0<em>Childhood Eyes<\/em>\u00a0EP upon its July release?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOverwhelmingly positive. We were all amazed by the outpouring of support and love for the new songs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-m lrv-u-margin-lr-auto   \">\n<ol start=\"12\">\n<li><strong>How did the EP capture where the band might be headed next?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWe hoped that, with this EP, we were able to rediscover the core sound of the band while also representing who we are now. I think we found exactly the direction we were looking for, and if we do any more new music, we\u2019ll continue down that path.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"container \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-m lrv-u-margin-lr-auto   \">\n<ol start=\"13\">\n<li><strong>Yellowcard is playing When We Were Young this weekend. What are you most looking forward to about the festival?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWatching Blink-182 and Green Day play two-hour sets each night.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"container \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-m lrv-u-margin-lr-auto   \">\n<ol start=\"14\">\n<li><strong>When We Were Young exploded last year, with some industry members surprised at the demand for a major pop-punk\/alternative\/emo festival. What do you think the overall reaction to the festival says about where that sound is at?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tI think it\u2019s incredibly encouraging for bands like Yellowcard, who are realizing how much life there is left in our careers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"container \/\/ lrv-a-font-body-m lrv-u-margin-lr-auto   \">\n<ol start=\"15\">\n<li><strong>You\u2019ve toured with a lot of the When We Were Young bands.
