\n\tAt just 18 years old, aspiring filmmaker Nico Ballesteros was given the opportunity to follow one of the most famous people in the world in Ye (formerly Kanye West<\/a>).<\/p>\n \n\tBallesteros whittled 3,000 hours of footage from about 2018 to 2024 in West\u2019s pocket to a two-hour documentary, <\/em>In Whose Name<\/em><\/a>?<\/a>,<\/a> which is a raw, unflinching look behind the curtain of one of music\u2019s most mercurial, brilliant, polarizing and chaotic acts. <\/p>\n \n\tThe documentary arrived in about 1,000 theaters across the U.S. on Friday (Sept. 19). There\u2019s no shortage of cameos, with appearances from Kim Kardashian<\/a>, Lady Gaga,<\/a> LeBron James<\/a>, Drake<\/a>, Chris Rock, Diddy<\/a>, Rihanna<\/a>, Elon Musk, Pharrell,<\/a> Swizz Beatz,<\/a> Charlie Kirk and Candace Owens, Anna Wintour, Virgil Abloh, Playboi Carti,<\/a> Marilyn Manson<\/a> and Justin Bieber. <\/a><\/p>\n \n\tIn Whose Name<\/em> is spread out through a prelude \u2014 which calls back to super rare archival footage from the 2000s \u2014 and three acts, along with a brief epilogue. It\u2019s not meant to paint West in a particular positive or negative light, but more to provide context and a look inside his last six years of turbulence.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cWe don\u2019t know if we glued together the story,\u201d West says in the doc. \u201cIf you\u2019re documenting every almost waking moment and sometimes sleeping moments of my life, and you don\u2019t understand the throughline, then the world\u2019s not going to understand the throughline. It\u2019s just going to look crazy, or it\u2019s going to be one antic to the next antic, the way the media words it.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tBallesteros called the documentary \u201ca revolving door of idolatry.\u201d \u201cI think that\u2019s why I created this project, to understand the human beneath the idol,\u201d the director added to NPR<\/em>. <\/a><\/p>\n \n\tFans have been asking themselves \u201cWhy, Ye?\u201d plenty of times over the years, and the doc provides some answers as to his thinking when it comes to some of his controversial decision-making \u2014 the good, the bad and the ugly. <\/p>\n \n\tIn Whose Name?<\/em> doesn\u2019t have a major plot line or theme surrounding West as the only thing linear really is the timeline following him, but it\u2019s a worthwhile watch for anyone who is (or was) a fan of the 21-time Grammy Award winner.<\/p>\n \n\tHere are seven standout moments from In Whose Name<\/em>. <\/p>\n
