She still holds the mark among women artists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGibson continued to rack up chart hits through the years, woven into a personal and career journey that has also encompassed Broadway and television roles, as well as mental and physical health challenges. In 2021, she released her first proper album in 20 years, <em>The Body Remembers<\/em>, which hit <em>Billboard<\/em>\u2019s Top Album Sales chart. She followed in 2022 with her first seasonal collection, <em>Winterlicious<\/em>, which decorated the top 20 on Top Holiday Albums.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDays before the release of the new book, Gibson served up her newest musical creation, premiering the video for <em>The Body Remembers<\/em> triumphant track \u201cLegendary.\u201d As throughout her career, it finds her showing off a range of talents, from boxing to adding an Elton John-esque piano run to the song\u2019s intro.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt was so interesting picking what I was going to write about, what I was going to leave out,\u201d Gibson says of <em>Eternally Electric<\/em>, published by Gallery Books, a division of Simon &amp; Shuster. \u201cI tried to give each era of my life equal time, because I\u2019ve had a lot of varied experiences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cSo, my mom and I had pitched a book, like, twice before this, always a memoir, but it was at times in my life where I really hadn\u2019t been through enough to write anything profound. I see why those deals didn\u2019t happen back then,\u201d Gibson muses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cBut it felt like right now \u2026 this is my true second act,\u201d she continues. \u201cIt\u2019s been for about five, six years. It really has been this rebuilding time and this reconnecting time with my audience. It just felt like a really fun perspective to be in the middle of it, and for the party to be going \u2014 not to be like, \u2018I\u2019m going to sit back now in old age and reflect on the good old days.\u2019 These are the good old days that I\u2019m living right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGibson pauses. \u201cBy the way, I say a line like that and I\u2019m like, \u2018Where was that in the book?!\u2019, \u201d she asks with mock anger, though seemingly strategizing on the fly, another hallmark of her endurance. \u201cThe paperback,\u201d she says. \u201cI can add things \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGibson wrote <em>Eternally Electric<\/em> guided by Richard Buskin, longtime author, podcaster and all-around pop-culture devotee (whose r\u00e9sum\u00e9 includes bylines in <em>Billboard<\/em>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/lists\/debbie-gibson-foolish-beat-number-one-1988-chart-rewind\/\">Gibson<\/a>\u2019s, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/lists\/debbie-gibson-lost-in-your-eyes-hot-100-chart-rewind-1989\/\">too<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhat did he bring to the process?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>\u201c<\/strong>Writing three-and-a-half-minute songs is very different than writing over 90,000 words about your life and knowing how to structure it,\u201d Gibson says. \u201cI always do really well with the right collaborator and the right sounding board, and he just really knows the structure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe whole idea was very much for it to be my voice. I mean, every word\u2019s mine, but he would point out when I repeated a word or when maybe I was sitting someplace too long and it wasn\u2019t moving along,\u201d she continues. \u201cIt\u2019s a weird thing when you\u2019re writing about your life to realize how much material there is. Her musical roots trace to kindergarten, when she showed-and-told an original song, \u201cMake Sure You Know,\u201d a classroom how-to deeper than its lyrics (\u201cMake sure you know your classroom, make sure you know your seat \u2026 I\u2019ll help you find your teacher, or you\u2019ll have to wait in the street!\u201d) In the book, Gibson writes, \u201cIt was like, <em>Better know your way around, kid, or we\u2019re kicking you to the curb!<\/em> My mind was always going to the worst-case scenario \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLooking back to her professional musical career\u2019s launch, and trajectory, Gibson says, \u201cI mean, it really is astounding that my records got on the radio, the charts, that I don\u2019t have a #MeToo story, that I\u2019ve landed in a very sane, happy, healthy place, and I\u2019m creatively thriving. I\u2019m not a statistic. That\u2019s pretty amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShaping her along the way? (Gibson\u2019s mother passed away in 2022.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt really was like she and I came full circle to where she could just be my mom,\u201d Gibson says, following the ups and downs that would seem unavoidable with a mother managing her daughter well into the latter\u2019s adulthood. \u201cI said to Heather the other day, my mom, if she was alive right now and in the industry, she\u2019d be going crazy, feeling like she couldn\u2019t keep up. And it\u2019s a lot to keep up with, you know?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cNobody could\u2019ve or would\u2019ve done what she did in the first part of my career,\u201d Gibson reflects. \u201cIt was her soul\u2019s passion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAnd nobody would have done it as well as her. Sometimes her bedside manner was that she was that tough Sicilian woman who was protecting her daughter. She pissed off a few people along the way. In Netflix\u2019s current juggernaut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/culture\/tv-film\/kpop-demon-hunters-music-producer-interview-1236025034\/\"><em>KPop Demon Hunters<\/em><\/a>, HUNTR\/X is the biggest musical act and all the members want to do is \u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/wpCMWWdIqnw\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">sink into a break<\/a>. Some days we\u2019re just going to feel off. We all try to hold on to those days where it\u2019s like, \u2018I love how I feel. I feel calm. Gibson chronicles in <em>Eternally Electric<\/em> that she had an eight-album deal but that she and the label mutually parted ways after those four.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIn hindsight, that was a lot to walk away from. I had a choice, but I didn\u2019t even entertain the choice,\u201d Gibson says. \u201cI see it as: Record companies take a lot of gambles. It\u2019s their checkbook, they\u2019re fronting the money. But at the same time, 20-year-old girls are in a very transitional phase. Nobody knows who they are at 20, so <em>Anything Is Possible<\/em> reflected that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe album\u2019s title cut hit the Hot 100\u2019s top 40, while subsequent single \u201cOne Step Ahead\u201d became a top 20 dance hit. Still, Gibson says of the set and its timing, \u201cI think my audience was like, \u2018I am leaving all the Debbie Gibson posters on my wall in my childhood bedroom \u2026 but I\u2019m not taking them to college, nor am I taking those albums to college.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<em>Body Mind Soul<\/em> produced another Hot 100 hit, the sultry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HPrsr0-hCk8\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cLosin\u2019 Myself.\u201d<\/a> Gibson writes in <em>Eternally Electric<\/em> that Atlantic executives pushed her out of her pop comfort zone for the LP, aligning it more with hit music\u2019s R&amp;B\/hip-hop focus at the time. (\u201c<em>Right, cuz when you think<\/em> urban<em>, you think<\/em> Debbie Gibson,\u201d she eye-rolls in the book.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen the album fell short of the success of her earlier works, Gibson details in the memoir that she didn\u2019t feel the same support from Atlantic as before, even though it was the label that had directed her to tweak her sound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI could have been scarred from <em>Body Mind Soul<\/em> and the way I left Atlantic,\u201d Gibson says. As ever, she finds positives. \u201cI look back on that album fondly. It was disconnected from who I was at the time, but I think it came out great. I think it\u2019s a well-crafted album. I love performing stuff from it now, because now I connect to it more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGibson explains that \u201cLosin\u2019 Myself,\u201d which she co-wrote and co-produced with <a href=\"https:\/\/primarywave.com\/writer\/carl-sturken-evan-rogers\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">pop\/R&amp;B hitmakers<\/a> Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers, \u201cwas me vocally. It\u2019s just that I really hadn\u2019t lost myself over anybody in a relationship by that time. It was me playing a role, kind of \u2014 look, I was playing a role singing \u2018Foolish Beat,\u2019 too \u2014 but \u2018Losin\u2019 Myself\u2019 was so sensual. I hadn\u2019t really had that ownership of myself yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI always say that the pop music audience\u2019s BS meter is very finely tuned,\u201d Gibson says. \u201cLike, as an audience member, I want my pop performers pure. I don\u2019t want to know it went through four chains of command to get to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGibson\u2019s next album, <em>Think With Your Heart<\/em>, was released on EMI\/SBK in 1995, and marked a return to her pure pop style, and with more ballads than before. Around that time, though, the label went through a leadership shakeup, stunting its promotion and potential chart impact. (First single \u201cFor Better or Worse\u201d made inroads at adult contemporary radio.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/music\/news\/sbk-records-oral-history-charles-koppelman-marty-bandier-daniel-glass-1235097440\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brian Koppelman<\/a>, I always thank him for helping me make that album and validating my creativity at the time,\u201d Gibson praises. \u201cI am very lucky, because I have had these men in the music business \u2014 like Brian, and Fred Zarr [who produced six songs on <em>Out of the Blue<\/em>, including three with Gibson] \u2014\u00a0who really were the antithesis of the Svengali-type execs, and they\u2019re just two of them. Lewis Martine\u00e9 [who produced <em>Out of the Blue<\/em>\u2019s \u201cPlay the Field\u201d] texted me yesterday. Like, I\u2019ve had that happen in film, in TV. That is just one of the things that happens, and you just have to kind of ride those waves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs with <em>Body Mind Soul<\/em>, Gibson considers <em>Think With Your Heart<\/em> key in her catalog. \u201cTo know that that album exists is amazing,\u201d she says. \u201cI did some of the songs from it this past year on tour \u2014 \u2018Didn\u2019t Have the Heart\u2019 and \u2018Dancin\u2019 in My Mind\u2019 \u2014 and it was really fun to revisit.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading larva \/\/   a-font-secondary-fancy-xl   \">\n\t\t<strong>From Glass Ceilings to Having a Glass<\/strong>\t<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGibson released her next albums <em>Deborah<\/em>, in 1997, and <em>M.Y.O.B.<\/em>, in 2001, on her own labels. She writes in <em>Eternally Electric<\/em> of now-manager Moore getting the former in front windows at retail in Times Square. How? Moore simply asked, which led to that prominent placement, reinforcing Gibson and her inner circle\u2019s resourcefulness throughout all stages of her career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThere were a lot of things, as you read, especially in the middle decades, going through all the challenges I went through financially, health-wise, with my mom, with relationships,\u201d Gibson says. \u201cAnd, you know, those are forks in the road for people. And that\u2019s when you find out what you\u2019re made of. And, by the way, I don\u2019t begrudge anyone in those moments to be like, \u2018I\u2019m out,\u2019 because that\u2019s better for some people, maybe. She adds with a laugh, \u201cIt feels like nobody told Beyonc\u00e9 how to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/lists\/beyonce-cowboy-carter-all-27-tracks-ranked-texas-hold-em\/\">her last record<\/a>, right?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI love that about music right now,\u201d she marvels. \u201cI hate when people go, \u2018Everything great was done yesterday.\u2019 I\u2019m like, wow, you\u2019re missing out on a lot if you think that way, because there\u2019s so much great stuff happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLate in the book, Gibson writes that she\u2019s a glass-half-full person \u2026 and if that\u2019s not enough, at least it\u2019s better to have a glass! Plus, a good thing about getting more experience is you\u2019re more equipped to deal with challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s like when you\u2019ve had everything stripped away and you\u2019ve rebuilt \u2026 I mean, I\u2019ve rebuilt with help from others, but the help from others has come, too, from my own accountability to those people. And I don\u2019t just mean financially, just in all the ways,\u201d Gibson says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI was given that resilience. That\u2019s, like, handed down to me. My dad\u2019s in his upper years now and is always glass-half-full.
