\n\tYung Lan<\/a>, a songwriter\/producer who has worked with chart-topping artists including Morgan Wallen<\/a>, Roddy Ricch<\/a> and Youngboy Never Broke Again<\/a>, has sold a portion of his publishing rights to GoldState Music in a mid-seven-figure agreement. So how did the young hitmaker (born Milan Modi) land such a rich deal so early in his trajectory?<\/p>\n

\n\tGoldState, which was launched by Charles Goldstuck<\/strong> three years ago, and in April secured $500 million<\/a> in financing to grow its music portfolio, says it acquired Lan\u2019s publishing rights to songs including Wallen\u2019s \u201cCowgirls,\u201d a 2023 single with Ernest<\/a> that hit No. 1<\/a> on Billboard<\/em>\u2019s Country Airplay chart; Fetty Wap<\/a>\u2019s \u201cRGF Island\u201d; and \u201cBacc Seat\u201d by Roddy Ricch featuring Ty Dolla $ign<\/a>, off Ricch\u2019s Billboard 200 chart-topping debut album Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tOutside of the Lan acquisition, GoldState owns rights to notable tracks including Kanye West<\/a>\u2019s \u201cFlashing Lights,\u201d Sheryl Crow<\/a>\u2019s \u201cIf It Makes You Happy\u201d and Panic! At The Disco<\/a>\u2019s \u201cI Write Sins Not Tragedies\u201d \u2014 all included in catalogs it\u00a0acquired<\/a> from Catchpoint Partners and AMR Songs. But the firm also targets deals like the one with Lan that fit within \u201ca sweet spot,\u201d Aregai says: active music creators selling off a portion of their recent repertoire. He adds that creators who sell rights to their older songs during a fruitful career period can earn a something of a premium for their works because \u201cwhen that artist has a new hit, we know from streaming behavior their back catalog benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThere is evidence of that for \u201cCowgirls\u201d and another Wallen track that Lan co-wrote, 2023\u2019s \u201cGood Girl Gone Missin,’\u201d both of which experienced a pickup in streaming in March and April ahead of the release of Wallen\u2019s fourth studio album, I\u2019m the Problem<\/em>, in May, according to data from Luminate.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor Lan, who emerged from humble roots as a teenage Kanye West<\/a> fan in rural Virginia, it took observing professional friends and collaborators selling their publishing rights to do it himself.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI just preferred to do that instead of the long wait,\u201d Lan tells Billboard<\/em>, referring to the publishing royalty payments that \u201cfluctuate each year\u201d and often take more than a year to receive. \u201cI would rather hold on to my masters. I\u2019m at the peak of my career, and I\u2019m not slowing down anytime soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPreparation for the deal began a year in advance and involved getting an independent evaluation, says Ruchir Mohan<\/strong> of 1916 Enterprises, who helped broker the agreement alongside lawyer Ben Cline<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n\tLan \u2014 an active investor in Atlanta real estate, private lending and French bulldogs who also has his own studio, Defiant Studios, and production group, Milan Production Group \u2014 had kept close track of his publishing rights and the dates when they would revert to him. When those dates approached, his team proactively contacted lawyers to reclaim those rights, Ruchir says.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe kind of work he and his team did up front before going to the marketplace, that adds to a catalog\u2019s price point,\u201d says Aregai. <\/p>\n

\n\tAfter an introduction was made by Goldstate\u2019s lawyer at Fox Rothschild, Mohan, Lan and Goldstate were able to reach an agreement in six months, says Aregai, adding it is one of the \u201ceasiest deals\u201d he\u2019s ever done.<\/p>\n

\n\tLan is happy with the outcome and is looking to relocate his Defiant Studios \u2014 which is currently located in Richmond, Va. \u2014 to Atlanta or Nashville.<\/p>\n
