\n\tRap\u2019s professor emeritus Rakim<\/a> responded to Kendrick Lamar<\/a> name-dropping him on his \u201cChains & Whips<\/a>\u201d guest verse from the Clipse<\/a>\u2018s new album Let God Sort Em Out<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n \n\tIn the verse, Lamar suggested he might consider splitting his riches with the rapper thanks to his influence over the modern rap scene. \u201cThe things I\u2019ve seen under my eyelids\/ Kaleidoscope dreams, murder, and sirens,\u201d Lamar rapped. \u201cLet\u2019s be clear, hip-hop died again\/ Half of my profits may go to Rakim.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tRakim took to his Instagram over the weekend to post a video<\/a> of Lamar driving his Porsche with his verse playing and expressed his appreciation for the acknowledgement. \u201cI salute you king,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThanks for the illest shout I heard in a long time, and keep up the incredible work my brother, you ain\u2019t no joke!!!! Peace and blessings to you and yours.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tThis isn\u2019t the first time the rap legend saluted Kendrick. During an interview with Billboard<\/a><\/em> last year, he was asked about Lamar\u2019s battle<\/a> with Drake<\/a> and showed love to both of them for stepping into the ring and keeping it hip-hop. \u201cYou know, a lot of people in that position won\u2019t accept no challenge, because they got too much to lose,\u201d he said. \u201cSo, it was dope that these brothers put the mainstream success down and said, \u2018Yeah, let\u2019s do it.’\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tRakim continued, adding that the battle helped define the difference between \u201creal hip-hop\u201d and more modern, popular versions of the artform. \u201cYounger artists now know that there\u2019s a difference. A lot of them didn\u2019t even understand that,\u201d he said. \u201cThey just listened to the majority, not knowing that a lot of people don\u2019t categorize what they were hearing as real hip-hop. The battle was very needed for the genre. I tip my hat to them brothers.
