I\u2019m Michael Nash, the Chief Digital Officer of Universal Music, where I\u2019ve led digital strategy for the past decade.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tIt\u2019s an honor to have this opportunity to highlight why music matters greatly to this dialog about \u201cAI for Good.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tTo better understand music\u2019s importance to this conversation\u2026 Let\u2019s start with the importance of music.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tYou will not be surprised to hear an executive from Universal Music say, as a starting point, \u201cMusic is Universal.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tMusic engages a massive global audience.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tIt\u2019s the soundtrack of life on this planet.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tAbout half the world\u2019s population is actively engaged.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tIn fact, music is the most popular form of entertainment in dozens of developed countries, where up to 90% of adults listen to music on a monthly basis\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\t\u2026With internet-enabled fans spending over 20 hours a week on average listening to music.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tEven more important than these engagement stats\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tMusic drives culture worldwide. As it has for centuries.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tComprehensive scientific research definitively concludes that music is integral to every society ever studied and pervades social life the world over\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tProving out the immortal words of Longfellow:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\t\u201cMusic is the universal language of humankind.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tBut music is not just a universal language\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tIt is a universal force for good\u2026bringing connection, expression, communion and enrichment to lives in every corner of the world.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tBeyond music\u2019s fundamental role in culture\u2026We are gaining a better understanding of how music promotes health and wellbeing.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tNeuroscientific revelations have established how music significantly influences cognitive, emotional and physical functions of the brain. Backed by this growing body of research, music is now being deployed in advanced therapeutic and breakthrough medical applications.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tThis builds on what we\u2019ve always known: that music is a powerful force for good in the minds, hearts and lives of people everywhere.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tWith this understanding of music\u2019s greater purpose, let\u2019s move into the conversation about technological disruption.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tFor well over a century, since the advent of sound reproduction and radio, music has been situated on the cutting edge of tech transformation\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tJust one of many examples\u2014this one quite relevant to the implications of AI\u2014Peter Gabriel\u2019s pioneering incorporation of digital synthesizers in the 1980s\u2026 (Play)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tAs the next major milestone in this journey of technological disruption and transformation, we believe AI can be instrumental to the future of music.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tHowever, it\u2019s critical to emphasize that AI will realize its potential to transform the future of music through the voices and visions of artists\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tYes, the scope of technological disruption may be unprecedented with AI, but that doesn\u2019t change a fundamental truth:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tIt\u2019s artists who\u2019ve always shaped global culture. (Mosaic Transition Plays)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tAnd that\u2019s why Universal\u2019s strategy on AI is based on a simple philosophy: Center the conversation on artists\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\t\u2026defend their rights and interests\u2026.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\t\u2026and from that foundation, forge new commercial and creative opportunities.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tTo maximize creative collaboration with technology, you must start from a foundation built on copyright and associated rights.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tOf course it\u2019s essential that we energetically defend our artists\u2019 interests. You can\u2019t forge new business models with \u201cnon-rights.\u201d If you don\u2019t claim a seat at the dinner table, you might wind up on the menu.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tWorking from our philosophy, we believe that market-based solutions are the answer.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tWe have enabled numerous entrepreneurs\u2026and are working with a wide range of major tech platforms\u2026in announced partnerships and with significant licensing deals in the works.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tThe anti-copyright premise of some AI industry commentators is deeply flawed.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tCopyright is not the enemy of innovation.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tQuite the opposite: Media\/Tech convergence predicated on respect for copyright has produced a multi-trillion-euro economy\u2026.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\t\u2026And that started with Apple: marrying iPod with iTunes in 2003 as a critical early step, embracing licensed music, to create the first trillion-dollar company.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tJobs wrote the blueprint. Now Google, Amazon, Meta and others are following in various ways with their own music and content strategies. Tech collaboration with the creative community, respecting the value of artists\u2019 work and harnessing their innovation, has produced enormous cultural and economic benefit.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tLessons learned in the first quarter of this century are why we believe the future of AI Music will be realized by unlocking new creative collaborations.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tThe future of AI music will not be the regurgitation of derivative knock offs of artists\u2019 music to cannibalize their current marketplace. Who wants that? It will be activated by putting new tools in the hands of artists so they can expand the market and create new experiences for their fans in partnership with technologists. This is how AI will promote innovation and advance culture.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tLet\u2019s look at some examples of these collaborations and how they\u2019re being fostered.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tAn important foundation in successful collaboration is being promoted by creative community alliances\u2026and Universal has taken a very active role.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\tJust one of many examples: We helped launch the Human Artistry Campaign and articulate its principles.
