\n\t\u201cMy kids watched this movie three-and-a-half times in 24 hours,\u201d Roppo tells Billboard<\/em> of his 12-year-old, 13-year-old and 15-year-old children. And the next day, they started blasting the songs from the soundtrack.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tRoppo noted this behavior from \u201cmy own little home test-market group,\u201d he says with a laugh, while also seeing how well KPop Demon Hunters<\/em> was performing on Netflix, and the eyebrow-raising early streaming numbers from the soundtrack. Before the end of the weekend, \u201cI started ringing all the alarms across the company, with all of our partners and teams,\u201d recalls Roppo \u2014 what once had piqued the interest of his family was quickly becoming a global smash.<\/p>\n

\n\tSince that opening weekend, millions of new viewers have watched KPop Demon Hunters<\/em>, an animated musical about a fictional K-pop girl group, HUNTR\/X, who secretly slay demon spirits when they\u2019re not dazzling arena audiences. Two and a half weeks after the film was released on June 20, KPop Demon Hunters<\/em> remains atop Netflix\u2019s global top 10 movies list<\/a>. And its soundtrack, which was released simultaneously, has surged higher on the Billboard 200, debuting at No. 8 and moving up to No. 3<\/a> in its second week, with 62,000 equivalent album units \u2014 a 97% increase from Week 1 to Week 2, according to Luminate.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen a soundtrack to an animated musical displays that type of growth, the culprit is usually a standout song or two \u2014 think \u201cLet It Go\u201d from Frozen<\/em>. But KPop Demon Hunters<\/em> is a phenomenon more reminiscent of 2021\u2019s Hot 100-blanketing Encanto<\/em> soundtrack, with seven songs from the soundtrack appearing on this week\u2019s chart, led by the HUNTR\/X anthem \u201cGolden\u201d at No. 23 and \u201cYour Idol,\u201d from their villainous boy band counterpart Saja Boys, at No. 31. Both songs have hovered near the top of daily U.S. and global streaming listings for days, but so have HUNTR\/X\u2019s hammering opener \u201cHow It\u2019s Done,\u201d the sticky-sweet boy band song \u201cSoda Pop\u201d and the pivotal ballad \u201cWhat It Sounds Like,\u201d all of which are currently in the top 11 of Spotify\u2019s Daily Top Songs USA chart.<\/p>\n
