{"id":16427,"date":"2022-04-27T18:02:50","date_gmt":"2022-04-27T22:02:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cyberlego.com\/web\/2022\/04\/27\/uefa-champions-league-knockout-stage-set-for-refit-two-legged-semi-finals-to-be-scrapped\/"},"modified":"2022-04-27T18:02:50","modified_gmt":"2022-04-27T22:02:50","slug":"uefa-champions-league-knockout-stage-set-for-refit-two-legged-semi-finals-to-be-scrapped","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cyberlego.com\/web\/2022\/04\/27\/uefa-champions-league-knockout-stage-set-for-refit-two-legged-semi-finals-to-be-scrapped\/","title":{"rendered":"UEFA Champions League knockout stage set for refit; two-legged semi-finals to be scrapped"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Europe\u2019s premier club competition could be set for a major facelift as the UEFA Champions League looks set to refit the latter stages of the competition in favour of a \u201cweek of football.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As reported by the Times as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/sport\/football\/news\/champions-league-scrapped-twolegged-semis-26816362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Mirror<\/a> and other outlets, UEFA chief Aleksander Ceferin is in favour of a format change that would see the two-legged semi-final stripped and replaced with a week of football surrounding one-off semi-final matches in the run-up to the final.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Momentum is building for two-legged Champions League semi-finals to be scrapped, with leading European clubs backing a plan to play the semis and the final over a single week in one city <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/oiAPIFRbab\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/t.co\/oiAPIFRbab<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Times Sport (@TimesSport) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TimesSport\/status\/1519361141583056898?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 27, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>This format would be similar to what is seen in the UEFA Nations League while also being hosted at a neutral venue, with Ceferin likening it to the Super Bowl in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at the Super Bowl it\u2019s a great event and they do it in a great way, they have concerts and people go there and have fun. Even if you lose those two matches you can get more revenue to compensate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could be a fantastic event for broadcasters, for sponsors. In the same week, you could have the final of the women\u2019s Champions League or youth competitions, you could really have a fantastic week of football. (Photo by Matthew Lewis \u2013 UEFA\/UEFA via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>That change of format has also been backed by ECA chairman and Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who stated: \u201cThe Super Bowl, and the U.S. generally, have this mindset, creativity, and entertainment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what I have suggested, to have an opening ceremony to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.101greatgoals.com\/news\/revealed-how-much-liverpool-are-set-to-earn-for-qualifying-for-champions-league-semi-finals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Champions League<\/a>, to have one match on the opening night where the winners take on a big team \u2014 maybe it is not a good idea, but at least let\u2019s challenge the status quo.
