\n\tToby Gad, a German-born musician who made a name for himself in America as a hit songwriter, recently celebrated the deluxe edition of Piano Diaries \u2013 The Hits,<\/em> a collection of his biggest songs (including two co-writes that topped the Billboard Hot 100, Fergie\u2019s \u201cBig Girls Don\u2019t Cry\u201d and John Legend\u2019s \u201cAll of Me\u201d) reimagined as collaborations with 17 fresh artists. The collection afforded the songwriter-producer the opportunity to look back on a career that has found him wearing many different hats; lately, he\u2019s been donning a reporter\u2019s cap, interviewing musicians about their careers, work habits and inspirations on his new podcast, Songs You Know with Toby Gad.<\/em><\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\tHit Songwriter Toby Gad on Why He Took a Break From the Industry \u2014 And Why He\u2019s Back With\u2026\t\t<\/p>\n<\/h3><\/div>\n

\n\tThe podcast\u2019s latest episode, which posted on Tuesday (April 15), finds Gad chatting with producer Jeff \u201cGitty\u201d Gitelman about everything from growing up in Moldova to learning English through hip-hop to working with Hozier.<\/p>\n

\n\tGitelman served as a producer on the Irish singer-songwriter\u2019s 2023 album Unreal Unearth <\/em>and its follow-up, the 2024 EP Unheard<\/em>. Both projects were inspired by Dante\u2019s 14th century classic Inferno<\/em>, but Gitelman says he and Hozier initially bonded over a different part of the literary canon.<\/p>\n

\n\tMeeting up during quarantine to work on new music in rural Ireland, Gitelman says he and Hozier spent \u201cthe first day or two just talking about James Joyce\u201d (Gitelman says he\u2019s a fan of Joyce\u2019s Dubliners<\/em> in particular). For the producer, those discussions were key to finding a trust that helped them as they worked on songs that bridged the gap between Irish folk and soul music (styles that Van Morrison, another artist the two discussed in detail prior to recording together, was especially adept at combining). \u201cA lot of times it\u2019s like, Andrew [Hozier], I don\u2019t know what it is you\u2019re saying in Gaelic, but let\u2019s do,\u201d Gitelman recalled. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe two also went deep on Gitelman\u2019s time working with Mac Miller on Swimming<\/em>, the final album released during the late rapper\u2019s lifetime, as well as hitting the top 10 on three Billboard<\/em> producer charts in the same week (Hot 100 Producers, R&B Producers and Country Producers) in November 2023 for his work on Jelly Roll & Jessie Murph\u2019s \u201cWild Ones\u201d and Victoria Mon\u00e9t\u2019s \u201cOn My Mama.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s a cool statistic, I like numbers,\u201d Gitelman says of the Billboard<\/em> chart coup. \u201cComing up from an artistic, musical world, it\u2019s nice. I\u2019ve been shouting from the rooftops, like, \u2018Hey I\u2019m pretty good\u2026\u2019 To have the numbers do all the talking is really nice. I don\u2019t think music is a competition\u2026 but man, the numbers sometimes give you the freedom to make the art you want to make.\u201d<\/p>\n
