\n\tLess than an hour into February\u2019s Grammy Awards telecast, one of the evening\u2019s undeniable peak moments occurred. Doechii<\/a> \u2014 the charismatic, lyrically dexterous Florida rapper who was up for three awards that night \u2014 won best rap album, making her just the second solo female rapper (and third overall) to win the honor. \u201cDon\u2019t allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you, to tell you that you can\u2019t be here, that you\u2019re too dark, or that you\u2019re not smart enough, or that you\u2019re too dramatic, or you\u2019re too loud,\u201d she declared in a tearful acceptance speech<\/a> that instantly went viral.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor Billboard<\/em>\u2019s Woman of the Year, it was the culmination of a stunning rise, propelled by her acclaimed mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal<\/em>. But it was also just a beginning: The 26-year-old Tampa MC hasn\u2019t even dropped her debut album yet.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tDoechii uploaded her first song to SoundCloud when she was just 16 and, in the following years, put out a pair of mixtapes, the latter of which included her first viral hit, 2020\u2019s \u201cYucky Blucky Fruitcake.\u201d In 2021, she guested on Isaiah Rashad\u2019s \u201cWhat\u00a0U Sed,\u201d and in 2022, she became the rapper\u2019s labelmate after signing a joint deal with Capitol Records and Top Dawg Entertainment.<\/p>\n

\n\tHer Kodak Black-featuring single, \u201cWhat It Is (Block Boy)\u201d \u2014 released in early 2023, around when she was named Billboard<\/em>\u2019s Women in Music Rising Star \u2014 became her highest-peaking entry on the Billboard Hot\u00a0100<\/a> at that date, but a fraught period followed; subsequent singles didn\u2019t catch on, and Doechii was, as she later wrote on social media, \u201cbattling differences with [her] label and a creative numbness that broke [her].\u201d To ease that tension, she turned to dance music. In March 2024, Doechii joined forces with Miami MC JT and DJ Miss Milan \u2014 the latter is now a fixture in her artist universe \u2014 to release \u201cAlter Ego,\u201d a vivacious house-rap track that served as a palate cleanser for the fans who hadn\u2019t enjoyed her pop-rap swings from 2023, while also setting the stage for her \u201cSwamp Sessions,\u201d weekly drops of new music that led up to Alligator Bites Never Heal<\/em>\u2019s late-August release.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe mixtape featured many \u201cSwamp Sessions\u201d tracks, though it wasn\u2019t an instant smash, debuting at No.\u00a0117 on the Billboard\u00a0200<\/a>. But for Doechii, that was just a jumping-off point to let her singular vision and meticulous world-building \u2014 magnetic live and televised performances anchored by smartly assembled medleys and athletic, Bob Fosse-referencing choreography; proudly Black glam; idiosyncratic music videos nodding equally to ballroom culture, Westerns and telenovelas \u2014 blossom.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the process, Doechii spun gold from one of the most painful periods of her life, and by late 2024, she was inescapable. In September, she featured on Katy Perry\u2019s dance-pop single \u201cI\u2019m His, He\u2019s Mine,\u201d and the following month, she delivered a scene-stealing verse on Tyler, The Creator\u2019s Chromakopia<\/em> standout \u201cBalloon.\u201d In December, she mounted a pair of eye-catching performances that kicked her rise into high gear: first, a medley of \u201cBoiled Peanuts\u201d and \u201cDenial Is a River\u201d on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert<\/em> that featured her own choreography; and, just two days later, her thrilling NPR Tiny Desk<\/em> set, which quickly dominated social media thanks to her fastidious storytelling and cohesive arrangements.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs her star has risen, Doechii\u2019s commitment to exalting all parts of her dark-skinned, Black queer self has remained paramount. It\u2019s why her first unaccompanied Hot\u00a0100 entry was \u201cDenial Is a River,\u201d in which she confides to her therapist that her boyfriend had been cheating on her with another man \u2014 just one example of how refreshingly honest (and unafraid to get messy on wax) an artist she is. The week following the Grammys, Alligator Bites Never Heal<\/em> soared to No.\u00a014 on the Billboard\u00a0200, and in late February, \u201cDenial Is a River\u201d peaked at No.\u00a021 on the Hot\u00a0100, while the track \u201cNissan Altima,\u201d which had been nominated for the best rap performance Grammy, hit No.\u00a073.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTo be so fresh in her career, Doechii has incredible vision and focus,\u201d Top Dawg Entertainment president Terrence \u201cPunch\u201d Henderson\u00a0Jr. says. \u201cShe\u2019s a true student of hip-hop and it shows based on how she\u2019s being embraced in the culture. The future is wide open for her.\u201d<\/p>\n
