\n\tThe next time you think you hate someone because they seem rude or stand-offish, consider the Kane Brown<\/a>\/Jelly Roll<\/a> conundrum. In an interview with Taste of Country<\/a><\/em> to promote his new album, The High Road<\/em>, Brown said the LP\u2019s intense collaboration with Jelly, \u201cHaunted,\u201d came about after the two men reached a detent following years of misunderstanding.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI heard of him before he had ever gotten in the country industry, because I was hanging out with some other guys that were in the world that Jelly was in. We had the same kinda background,\u201d said Brown of the \u201cSave Me\u201d singer who began his career as an MC. Despite having mutual friends, the two men had never met or talked and Brown said one of his pals confirmed to him that Jelly \u201chated me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe mutual pal, Taylor Phillips, told Jelly, \u201c\u2018Nah, man, you don\u2019t know him\u2026 he\u2019s really quiet,\u201d Brown said of the misunderstanding that may have been born of his quiet, subdued nature early in his career. So Brown, 31, reached out to Jelly Roll, 40, so they could settle their phantom beef and come together.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTaylor ended up telling me the story, so I ended up reaching out to Jelly, I was like, \u2018Hey buddy, this industry\u2019s crazy. If you ever need to sit down and talk to me, or play COD\u2019 \u2014 I play a lot of Call of Duty<\/em> \u2014 \u2018You can come and talk to me about it,’\u201d Brown said. Jelly Roll responded, they played some COD<\/em> and then were fast friends who now \u201ctext all the time,\u201d including \u201crandom FaceTimes at 3 a.m.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThat peace pact spun forward to their duet on \u201cHaunted,\u201d which chronicles the mind game of seemingly having it all while struggling with crippling depression and dark thoughts. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat song means more to me now than it ever has and it\u2019s about to come out at the perfect time,\u201d Brown told Billboard<\/em> about the tune with the plaintive chorus, \u201c\u2018Cause I\u2019m haunted by the voice in my head\/ I\u2019m haunted by the taste of that lead\/ I wanted too many times to jump off of the edge\/ Thinkin\u2019 I was better off dead.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe slow-rolling single with skittering drum machine beats mashed against both mens\u2019 drawling vocals is of a piece with Jelly\u2019s frequent lyrical focus on mental health and his battles with substance use. In his recent chat with Billboard<\/em>, Brown confirmed that the two men don\u2019t just hang now, but they\u2019ve actually developed a real connection.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHanging with Jelly is fun, and you never know what he\u2019s going to say \u2014 and I\u2019m not a big talker, so it\u2019s cool,\u201d Brown said. \u201cHe\u2019s funny and honestly just a comedian. I love what he\u2019s doing. My dad\u2019s been in prison since \u201996, so everything Jelly has been doing with prisons, just going and giving them entertainment, kudos to him. He\u2019s a great dude.\u201d<\/p>\n
