\n\tSelena Gomez<\/a> gave a thoughtful speech about what representation and inclusion mean to her while accepting the Equity in Entertainment Award at The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>\u2018s Women in Entertainment Gala on Wednesday morning (Dec. 4).<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter an introduction from her Only Murders in the Building <\/em>co-star Molly Shannon, the 32-year-old singer\/actress took the event stage at the The Beverly Hills Hotel to formally receive the honors \u2014 which recognized her advocacy for underrepresented communities in the entertainment industry \u2014 and deliver remarks on the subject of equity. To begin her speech<\/a>, Gomez defined equity and representation as \u201censuring that women, regardless of their background, have equal opportunities to share their stories and showcase their talents.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s about moving from tokenism to true inclusion, creating spaces where women of all races, sexual orientations and abilities are [welcome],\u201d she continued. \u201cTogether, we can break down barriers, amplify women\u2019s voices and create a future where everyone\u2019s stories are told.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Rare Beauty founder also shared the moment she first realized the full scope of her position as a role model: when the mother of a young girl went up to her at a live taping of Wizards of Waverly Place<\/em> and said she was grateful her daughter had a Latina actress to look up to on TV.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI really wasn\u2019t thinking about the importance of representation or the gravity of what those words meant,\u201d Gomez recalled. \u201cBut I knew that I was very grateful, and I wanted to do my best to live up to that, whatever form it looked like.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile at the event \u2014 which comes just a couple of weeks after Emilia Perez <\/em>starring Gomez, Karla Sof\u00eda Gasc\u00f3n and Zoe Salda\u00f1a arrived on Netflix \u2014 the \u201cLose You to Love Me\u201d singer also stopped to talk with Billboard <\/em>on the red carpet about how the film serves to advance equity in the entertainment industry. \u201cI think it\u2019s just crucial that we shed light, and we show people exactly every color we are,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWith Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/em>, <\/em>we were able to do that with the music and the subject matter of our movie,\u201d she continued. \u201cIt\u2019s us wanting to open doors, it\u2019s for Latinas \u2026 we\u2019re celebrating women.\u201d<\/p>\n
