\n\tThis summer, singer-songwriter Yeison Jimenez achieved his lifelong dream of selling out the coveted Movistar Arena in Bogot\u00e1, Colombia \u2014 not once, but three times, with more than 40,000 collective fans attending the shows. The feat was not only historic for Jimenez, but for any m\u00fasica popular<\/em> (regional Colombian) artist. \u201cNo one in the genre has been able to [sell out] a solo arena throughout Colombia,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\n\tM\u00fasica popular \u2014 which fuses ranchera<\/em> and the string music known as carrilera<\/em> in Colombia \u2014 was born more than five decades ago in the country\u2019s coffee region, which has four departments: Caldas (where Jimenez was born), Quind\u00edo, Risaralda and Tolima. Initially known as m\u00fasica de\u00a0carrilera<\/em> or m\u00fasica de\u00a0cantina<\/em>, its inspiration derived from regional Mexican music and first gained traction in small towns and local bars with the help of genre pioneers including Dar\u00edo G\u00f3mez, Luis Alberto Posada and El Charrito Negro.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs Jimenez tells it, m\u00fasica popular traces back to G\u00f3mez in particular. The former notes that when the latter arrived at radio stations with the newborn fusion in the \u201970s, they told him he was crazy.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis is not like vallenato<\/em>, which is something authentically ours \u2014 we did not invent this,\u201d m\u00fasica popular singer Pipe Bueno says. \u201cWe are a subgenre that comes from Mexico but with our essence and our flavor. The fact that we are Colombian gives it a different color.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLyrically, a regional Colombian song will often focus on despecho<\/em> (heartbreak) or rejoicing in good times. Sonically, the arrangements can mirror the instrumentation of mariachi and ranchera music, such as trumpets, violins and the guitarr\u00f3n<\/em> (six-string acoustic bass), blended with the accordion, commonly used in vallenato.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs part of the new wave, Bueno and Jimenez \u2014 alongside artists including Paola Jara, Luis Alfonso, Jessi Uribe and Arelys Henao \u2014 have not only given the genre a modern twist but also propelled it to an international scale. Jimenez first reached Billboard<\/em>\u2019s Latin Airplay<\/a> and Regional Mexican Airplay<\/a> charts with \u201cTu Amante\u201d in 2021, and he\u2019s now touring nightclubs and theaters across the United States. Bueno, who entered the Latin Digital Song Sales<\/a> and Latin Rhythm Airplay<\/a> charts with his 2014 song \u201cLa Invitaci\u00f3n\u201d (featuring Maluma), has since collaborated with Grupo Firme and inked a deal with Warner Music Latina earlier this year.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe are an aspirational genre,\u201d Bueno says. \u201cWe have been at the top of the streaming charts alongside Peso Pluma. We are filling arenas. It wasn\u2019t like this [when I started my career].\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen we came into the game, we wanted to make music that would reach other countries and, above all, other generations,\u201d Jimenez adds. \u201cOn one hand, there\u2019s a lot of admiration. On the other hand, we are criticized a bit\u2026 I don\u2019t pigeonhole myself because we are in another era.\u201d<\/p>\n
